For some time now, Google says their upcoming algorithm update will rank mobile optimized sites higher in search results and penalize those that aren’t. On April 21st, they officially implemented the system. The new algorithm categorizes websites based on their mobile friendliness in an effort to change the way mobile users conduct searches and shop.
Any websites that don’t fit Google’s “mobile-friendly” criteria will be bumped to the back of the search results line. While this system won’t affect searches conducted on laptops and desktops, it still has a huge effect on consumers, as over 80% of the population uses their smart phones for searching. This trend is expected to continue rising. Needless to say, if your website isn’t optimized for mobile, it absolutely must be soon.

Within the new mobile-friendly ranking system, Google bots look for several additional factors. Not only does your site need to function on smart phones and tablets, it needs to function well. Mobile sites will be analyzed for:
Functionality: Site conversion must be streamlined, easy to scroll through, and have appropriate resolution.
Speed: Mobile sites are expected to load much faster than traditional web pages.
Content Optimization: Content on the site will need to be easy to read without cutting off titles or body text. SEO is still relevant, but it warrants a few changes as well.
Clickable: CTA buttons and other interactive components must be large and easy to complete.
Fortunately, Google’s algorithm change doesn’t come without reason. Millions of people using smart phones for searching every day means your business will be making a wise investment. The market is only getting more competitive, so it’s worth making the changes now before it’s too late. Check the “mobile friendly” status of your site here by typing in the URL of your page.
